Belgian Political Update - Friday 17 April 2020

This week was supposed to be the last in the near lockdown situation of the country, which, in her press conference of Friday 27 March, the Prime Minister had announced would last until Sunday 19 April. Although the number of occupied beds in hospitals are slowly stabilising since one week (at around 5,500 beds, 1250 of which in intensive care, which is in the realm of 54% of capacity), it was rumoured that this might be insufficient to already lift the measures In France, president Macron stated in a speech on Monday 13 April that the measures in France are being prolonged until May 11. The question was if Belgium would follow its Southern neighbour or, on the contrary, opt for a partial, gradual loosening of the measures, as a total lifting of the lockdown seemed unrealisable for the moment.
